Holistic pain management is about seeing and treating pain by addressing the whole person and not only as a physical symptom to be suppressed. All physical, mental and emotional aspects are completely interwoven and what affects one aspect will have a direct effect upon all the others. The reason we experience pain is a warning from the body to the conscious mind that there is a definite problem which needs addressing.

The management of pain and the discomfort pain causes have been major considerations for as long as the human race has been able to experience pain. With time, there has been a reduction in the human body’s ability to produce and release natural pain management chemicals due to modern day life and chemical and substance addiction. Physical and psychological pain is very closely linked on a number of levels. It is medically accepted that the experience of physical pain and discomfort can be emotionally and psychologically painful and that mental pain can lead to and cause physical pain. Stress, anxiety, depression and worry are regarded by the medical profession as endorphin inhibitors because the more that these conditions are experienced by the individual, the lower the level of production of serotonin. This has the knock on effect of reducing the levels of endorphins that are produced, therefore, creating the situation where the body’s natural pain coping strategy is vastly reduced. This allows more pain messages to reach the brain and be actioned, creating more of the pain sensation.
